After every couple of dead raiders, I checked his ammo count.Ĭompanions use up ammo for their non-default weapons

For the settler, I did the same laser rifle with 50 cells. After every couple I checked her ammo, until she had none left and switched to her default 10mm pistol. First I tested piper I spawned some raiders using the console. Simple, I gave a laser rifle and 50 cells to each, by themselves (lasers are very easy to see so I knew that they were shooting and a rough count on how much they shot). Settlers do not have a default weapon if they don't have a weapon they will use fisticuffs. If you give a settler a weapon and ammo and he immediately starts combat, he will use up the ammo (and behave similar to the companion at step 2).Īfter a couple of seconds (~4-10ish), the ammo will "register", and from that point on he will have unlimited ammo and not use up his supply. This means if you give a settler only a weapon but no ammo, he will behave similar to the companion at step 2. If you give a settler a weapon and the appropriate ammo, it will take a couple of seconds to "register". This sounds counter-intuitive, so let me elaborate: However, you have to give a settler the appropriate ammo. Settlers do not use up ammo while firing their weapons. Settlement NPCs (and to a larger extend all humanoid NPCs): At that point, they will search for a new weapon (in this order) either pick up ammo for their equipped weapon from a nearby container, pick up the next strongest weapon (might be stronger than what you told them to equip) and ammo from nearby container or change to their default weapon. After continues fire, they will run out of ammo.

So, I did some testing using console cheats and came to the following result:Ī companions default weapon has unlimited ammo and is not visible and can not be removed (just like their default clothing).Ī companion using a weapon you assigned them to equip, will use up ammo.
